"The Power of Reputation"

Our long-term personal or organizational success greatly depends how others perceive our character, product or service.  When either of them is viewed with a negative perception, it increases the chances that we will fail in the long run.

The perception of others hinges on the choices we make individually and as an organization.  When we choose to do things that benefit the common good— or said differently—benefit all of our stakeholders, we significantly increase the likelihood for long-term success.

Yet we find too many ill-intended personal and organizational decisions made in search of higher short-term gains, which actually lead to long-term losses.  Pressure to succeed, cash incentives, promotions—whatever the motive, unethical decisions and behaviors disrupt our lives and organizations.  The news media is inundated with people and organizations that have shunned legal and moral thinking, and found guilty of illegal or unethical practices, and as a result have had to face fines, debarment, or incarceration.

Organizations, because of their overwhelming influence in society, have a clear responsibility and motivation to model and promote ethical behavior.  In addition to helping to create a better world, organizations must be concern with how they use their value assets of intellectual prowess, time and money. When unethical decisions are discovered, people and organization have to use those valuable assets trying to correct the pass, instead of focusing on the future.

The lack of integrity has caused a moral decay in our society that can only be reversed if people in positions of leadership take the initiative to champion ethical behavior. Organization leaders have tremendous influence, and must use that influence to change the way employees think about the value of honesty.

"The Power of Reputation" illustrates why short-term ethical lapses can lead to long term financial losses or bankruptcy.  Even when the punishment is not severe, lapses in ethical behavior can lead to the loss of time, money, intellectual efforts, community embarrassment, customers’ attrition and disgruntled employees.
